It was probably one of the toughest decisions made, since the roof would have to be, this way, very very steep... Have we mentioned that no electric tools were used troughout the whole construction process? Yep! That sure made the construction much harder and time consuming, but also much more intersting! So, in the spring, a team headed to Herdade da Apostiça to pick caniço (water reed) to make the thatch roof. But after two weeks of intense sun burns and scratches (that sure wasn't the right time to pick caniço...) the team got back to the Quinta only to find out that the amount of caniço picked wasn't enought to cover for the whole roof. A slight change of plans: the team would part for the Summer (Eric and Satu went to Finland, Michael and Loren went to Almoçageme to help Sean and Sofia build a small house for the newcoming baby!), to remeet in December to pick the remnant caniço on the right time.
]]><![CDATA[Cobing the walls and peeling the beams]]>Mon, 30 Dec 2013 14:18:07 GMThttps://www.quinta7nomes.com/earthship/cobing-the-walls To cover the walls we used cob made in loco with sand from the river, straw from a nearby farm, and clay also brought from a near place. While part of the group coobbed the walls and started to make the floor, another part started to prepare the enormous acacia beams for the roof.
]]><![CDATA[Tire walls]]>Sat, 28 Dec 2013 15:29:03 GMThttps://www.quinta7nomes.com/earthship/tire-walls By stacking 9 layers of tires with dirt pounded ,the walls of the 5 meter diameter room were starting to take shape. With a little help of 23 friends, the walls were raised in less than a week. The tires were repurposed from a nearby garage. Check it out!

It all started because Quinta dos 7 nomes wanted to make a new small yoga room to make sure we could host courses and mantain yoga classes regularly at the same time. When we met the guys from the poosh we found a great opportunity.
By using tires for the walls, and cob to cover them, we would have a virtually free 5m diameter yoga room. We organized a tri-parted workshop, wich gathered much more people than we culd ever imagine, and the construction begun! Here are some pictures...
